Tell us about your wellness journey success while personal training this past year?
I've gone from not being able to lift a 45-pound barbell to now deadlifting 155 pounds on the trap bar and finishing my first half marathon with my goal time! Iโve made incredible strides in my physical strength with Jesse's help so far. For a bonus, personal training with Jesse was one of the most critical components of overcoming my post-partum depression.

What advice do you have for someone just getting started on their wellness journey?
Start by setting clear, compelling goals.
Find and hire the best possible person to support you. Surround yourself with high-energy experts who can consistently inject their know-how into your plan.
Show up fully, trust the process, and stand firmly behind your decisions.
The key is to approach this methodically, plan strategically and understand your system.

What motivated you to work with a personal trainer?
Being in your best shape and in good health is the best thing that you can do for yourself. In the past few years, I gained weight because I was struggling to find motivation during my workouts and with my eating habits. I like to keep track of VO2 max on my smart watch and noticed it had been decreasing because my workouts werenโt demanding enough. I knew that a personal trainer would help me stay motivated, hold me accountable, and push me to workout harder than I could do myself.
In 2019, I ran under two hours for half marathon races. In the past year, it was challenging to finish the half marathon races by three and a half hours. After a several weeks of two 1-hour training sessions per week with my trainer, I ran my most recent half marathon in 3 hours, which I was happily surprised by!
Why do you choose our Dow Midland Wellness Centers over any other fitness center in the area?
I have been to different gyms in Midland, and Dowโs East End Wellness Center is my favorite gym. Iโve been attending the gym often since 2017 and I enjoy interacting with the staff. I did personal training in 2018-2019. That led to me meeting a few runners who were working out and training for marathons and races. I would not have met them if I didnโt have a networking through the personal trainer. I never thought I would ever run a full marathon, but I have done three full marathons and multiple of half marathons since 2019.
I think itโs great that Dow has wellness centers that help employees to network and create relationships in Midland. My personal trainer is learning some sign language to communicate with me such as sets, reps, weights, and so on.
What advice would you give to someone contemplating working with a personal trainer?
Personal trainers like to push their clients to workout harder to make it worthwhile. They will be honest about the weights and if theyโre too light or too heavy, the trainer will keep you working harder while knowing your limits. It is helpful for the trainer to know what level of fitness you currently are at. Also, do not expected to get results overnight because it takes time to see the results as long you stay consistent with workouts, meal planning, and recovery.

I was determined to lose weight and really get back into the shape I had been in prior to the pandemic. I had discussed rejoining the gym with my husband in 2024, feeling my foot would be fully ready to become active.
My children were happy and relieved to see me pain free and becoming more active. They gifted me with personal training sessions as one of my Christmas gifts. I began going to the gym and decided to start with a Strength and Stretch class. Having done absolutely nothing for almost a year and a half, this seemed like a good class to begin exercising and establishing the habit of going to the gym on a regular basis.
All the personnel at the Wellness Center were welcoming, supportive and helpful. I began 30-minute sessions with Amy. She discussed the importance of core strength and how it would lead to better overall strength and balance. This was especially important to me due to my toe amputation. I looked forward to each session knowing I would learn something to make me stronger. Amy listened to my concerns. She modified workouts to fit my needs. The encouragement and support of a personal trainer are motivating and rewarding. She applauded my accomplishments.
Three people I loved died in 2023, 2 of cancer and 1 from a heart attack. This was the main motivator for me. Be healthier, get regular checkups, stay challenged and physically active. Make time to nurture myself. I consider my personal trainer Amy my teacher and friend.
I am enjoying the sense of accomplishment in taking care of my health. The Wellness Center is a great place to start and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

I began a more comprehensive effort to improve my health late in 2023. I had some chronic issues related to my weight. A more acute issue arose that helped motivate me to get started. I decided to make use of the excellent resources available at the Dow Midland Wellness Centersโ a great gym, personal training with Jason Koester at the Easy End Wellness Center and nutrition and dietary counseling with Maggie Rettelle at Quad Medical on the 1st floor. Jason and Maggie have been very supportive and central to my wellness journey success to date. They designed healthy personalized approaches to losing weight while retaining as much muscle as possible. I lost more than 100 pounds and reached the approximate weight goal I set. Now my emphasis is shifting to weight maintenance and building strength.

Be patient with yourself. Set aside time for a daily activity that will raise your heart rate. Talk to a nutritionist/dietician about getting the nutrition you will need to stay energized and strong. You may be surprised at the amount of protein you need (which increases as we get older). Be open to support and encouragement from friends, family and Wellness Center staff. Consider getting a personal trainer who can design a flexible plan customized for you, help keep you motivated and can provide insight into your progress.
